“We are an amalgamation between ancient Ayurveda and modern-day aesthetics”, says Pooja Karegoudar and Tanushree Ishani Das, Co-Founders of BODYCafé

Our skin is one of the fifth largest and amongst the most important organ of our body. It is exposed to every situation and all weather conditions- from sunny summers, to dry winters and humid monsoons too. Whatever may be the season; our skin is the first thing which gets affected due to exposure to various kind of weather condition.

That is why in today’s time, people have been focusing more on their skin health, by going herbal and organic, resulting in healthy and radiant skin. Numerous brands have been taking several measures to make chemical-free products and have been trying to incorporate the ancient method of making products that could be as natural as they could get.

Recently we came across BODYCafé, a beauty, lifestyle and wellness product-oriented brand which caters to organic, handcrafted, and cruelty-free products for their customers.

Started in 2019, the Co-founders of BODYCafé- Ms Tanushree Ishani Das and Ms Pooja Karegoudar, were also appreciated for their work last year and earned the title of 10 most promising women leadership in FMCG Industry 2020 by Silicon Valley magazine.

We spoke to Tanushree and Pooja to know their journey and their challenges and they share some really important facts which made their brand stand out from the crowd with their great initiatives.

How did you find the brand? Why did you name it BodyCafé?

BodyCafé is a beauty and wellness brand deeply inspired by ancient home remedies (gharelu nuskhe), nature (Prakriti), Ayurveda & Healing Aromatherapy. We all are stuck in an endless battle of us versus stress. From the moment we wake up till we’re back in our bed again there is a constant simmering of to-do lists. It’s only a matter of time when it all boils over. Amidst this manic hustle-bustle of life, we realised that people want a healthy lifestyle where all is well. All they need is a little support to help them start investing in themselves.

Thus, BodyCafé was born. We realised most people do not have access to off-the-shelf products that offer them ancient remedies and are price sensitive. They dedicate a ‘self-care Sunday’ to make these combinations at home, which is not sustainable. We address this directly, by hand-making our products with the quality of age-old remedies and nature’s goodness and give our users an affordable packed product.

How has been the market response?

We started BodyCafé in 2017 out of a common passion for natural grooming products. The responses received from our users were encouraging and we grew a steady and loyal user base. We did some more R&D and market surveys, collated the feedback and expectations of our users, developed the entire product range and officially launched ourselves as a Pvt. Ltd. company in 2019.

We have catered to over 50,000 users, delivering across India. We have an online presence (www.bodycafe.in) and also have listed on other e-commerce portals such as Gorg, LBB, Ecohoy, Earthy Selections, Flipkart. Some of our prestigious B2B clients include MakeMyTrip, Fynd, Amazon India, State Police Dept (Telangana, Assam), Axis Bank (North East), Miniso (Karnataka & Salem) to name a few. We also have an offline retail presence in FitDay stores in Hyderabad.

We have also received love from influencers like Nandini Bhalla (Editor Cosmopolitan India, Digital Editor LSG Magazine) Karishma Mehta (Founder Humans Of Bombay) and Maanvi Gagroo (PK, No One Killed Jessica, 4 more shots & Best actress TVF), Niharika KonidelaNoel SeanAashka Goradia, Sheeba, celebrity fitness expert Shwetambari Shetty, Former Miss World India Natasha Suri, BBC’s 100 most influential & renowned author and Yogi Ira Trivedi that has helped us carve a small yet a steady niche for ourselves in the market.

Where is your manufacturing unit?

Herbal or Ayurvedic- which one is your main focus and why?

We are an amalgamation between ancient Ayurveda and modern-day aesthetics. The USP of our brand is that we infuse the goodness of healing Aromatherapy in our products wherein we ensure our users feel an overall sense of emotional well being in addition to experiencing the highest standards of personal grooming.

Painstaking research, the highest standards of purity, authenticity, quality, and ethical sourcing of organic ingredients go into the making of our products.

How are you empowering women? And how are you adding value:

Through our brand, we aim to empower the Indian agriculturalists i.e the REAL GROWERS and strongly focus on the community grown products of India. For instance, we procure Lakadong Turmeric from Padma Shri awardee Trinity Saioo also known as the Turmeric lady of India who is credited with spearheading the women-led turmeric farming in the North East of India and has empowered 800 women-farmers.

Our packing is done by women who are warriors of domestic and marital abuse. Plus with the revenue that we generate, we allocate a considerable amount to donate covid and daily essentials to orphanages and old age homes. Furthermore, we have made Covid Family Safety Kits and have received an overwhelming response from North East wherein we have employee youth who have lost their jobs due to this current pandemic.

We also offer collaboration opportunities to many homegrown women-led businesses and womenpreneurs during festive/seasonal launches.

Brief about the founders:

Pooja Karegoudar is an Engineer by qualification but the idea of a 9-5 job never lured her. She uses to love playing with ingredients, aroma and colours at an early age and her kitchen use to be her lab for all her experiments.

Pooja is a food enthusiast, a movie buff, a mother and a woman entrepreneur, who is working on setting an example to be the perfect women- who can balance the work and family life, both.

Tanushree Ishani Das, on the other hand, is the other wheel to the cart of BodyCafé. She is an alumni from King’s College London and further holds a degree in Organisational Psychiatry & Psychology too. Her research on “How Appraisal affects motivation in India & UK” has been published as a book by Lambert Academic Publishing.

Tanushree’s journey at BodyCafé is said to be challenging yet nurturing. She believes that there will be new challenges every day that will come with no manual on how to manoeuvre through them, and being a women entrepreneur, she is charged up to face them and make it big with her excellence and sheer research for her brand.
